Adi Kumbeswarar temple is the oldest Shiva temple and the prime attraction in the town of Kumbakonam. Built by the Cholas in 7th Century, the city Kumbakonam derived its name due to the presence of this temple. This temple is famous for its conical shape Shiva Linga. Lord Shri Adi Kumbeswara and Goddess Mangalambigai are deities in the temple worshipped by the pilgrims who come here from all over the world.
Nageswarar Temple
Nageswarar temple is also one of the ancient Shiva temples in the town of Kumbakonam. This temple is the home of serpent gods. It was also built by the Chola dynasty during 12th century. This temple is known for its finest structure and architectural work. Lord Nageswarar Swamy and goddess Periyanayagi Amman are the main deities of the temple.
Kasi Vishwanthar Temple
Kasi Vishwanthar temple is located near Mahamahan Tank in Kumbakonam, where Mahamahan festival is organized in every 12 years. Goddess Vishalakshi Amman is the main deity of the temple along with the 9 presiding deities which are the famous 9 rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Saraswati, Cauvery, Godavari, Tungabhadra, Krishna and Sarayu. Tourists are attracted by the South Indian style design and architecture of the temple. You can witness the huge crowd at the temple during the Mahamahan festival.Sarangapani Temple
Sarangapani Temple is one of the famous Vishnu temples located near the town of Kumbakonam. It is located at the bank of Cauvery River and is one among the 108 Divya Deshams. It was renovated by the Nayaka dynasty in the 16th Century. Sarangapani Swamy and Komalavalli Thayar are the main deities of the temple who are served by the pilgrims.There are several other places in the town which you can explore in Kumbakonam such as Ramaswamy Temple, Abhimugeswarar Temple, Uppiliappan Temple, Mahamahan Tank, Brahma Temple, Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham Mutt, Thiruvidaimarudur, Bhagavatha Padithurai Ghat and so on. Getting to Kumbakonam
You can easily travel to the town of Kumbakonam by road and train as the town is well connected by road and rail transport, but there is no airport in the town.By Road: There are regular government and private buses available from Kumbakonam to Chennai, Thanjavur, Mannargudi, Tiruchirapalli, Chidambaram, Nagapattina, Madurai, Pondicherry, Tirunelveli, Bangalore and Mysore. TNSRTC and KSRTC buses regularly ply to the town of Kumbakonam. In 1972, Government of Tamil Nadu established the Cholan Roadways Corporation in the town for the improvement of transportation facilities in the state. You can also travel by private taxis to Kumbakonam from the nearby cities.
By Train: There is well railway network in Kumbakonam and the town is well connected to all the cities and towns of Southern India by railways. There are regular express and passengers trains are available from Kumbakonam to Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Mysore, Bangalore and Mayiladuthurai.
By Air: There is no airport in the town of Kumbakonam. The nearest international airport is located in Tiruchirappalli which is about 92 km away from the town of Kumbakonam. Rest of the journey from Tiruchirappalli to Kumbakonam can be continued by road or rail transport.
